Wossamotta University ENGR 100 - Introduction to Engineering

Course Summary: Students are enabled to analyze a real-world problem, apply an appropriate design process, and report a solution to a target audience.

Course objectives:

  1. Formulate real-world engineering problems in technical, societal, and financial contexts.
  2. Implement the tools and skills provided by different engineering disciplines in the solution off design problems.
  3. Utilize industrial- and research-related software tools to solve engineering problems.
  4. Articulate solutions to engineering problems through oral and written communication methods.
  5. Assess the broader implications of designs in a global and societal context.

Modules:

  1. Grand Challenges of Engineering
  2. Oral Communication Skills - One Minute Engineer activity - use of rubrics and peer assessment
  3. Criteria and Constraints - Tower of Straws activity - introduction of realistic constraints and decision matrices
  4. Teamwork - reflection on (unstructured) Tower of Straws activity
  5. Written Communication Skills, 1: emails, memos, letters, tables, figures
  6. Engineering Design Method
  7. End of Term Team Competition - includes evaluation of designs, product performance, oral presentation, written report, etc.
